Symbol Show
Dear friends and artists,
Tamas Veszi and Carla Aspenberg invite you to submit your proposals for the group exhibition "the Symbol Show" (yes, we're still working on the title)
“A symbol, in its basic sense, is a conventional representation of a concept or quantity; i.e., an idea, object, concept, quality, etc. In more psychological and philosophical terms, all concepts are symbolic in nature, and representations for these concepts are simply token artifacts that are allegorical to (but do not directly codify) a symbolic meaning, or symbolism.” -Wikipedia.com
We are constantly surrounded by symbols to such an extent that we do not even notice them. Often, it is only when the meaning of a symbol changes that makes us aware of its impact on our thought processes and cultural perspectives.
For the purposes of this show, we are specifically interested in the evolution and transformation of the meanings behind visual symbols. Meanings of symbols can change for various reasons, specifically because of historical and sometimes controversial events, or a specific instance in an artist's personal life.
For example, the pattern of the swastika was used by many cultures in the past 3,000 years to represent power, strength, life, and good luck but this definition changed for most of the Western world when the Nazis came to power. Another example is the image of The World Trade Center, which has changed from a symbol of American success to a symbol of tragedy, perseverance and political conflict which exists now only in our collective memories. Both of these examples could be used as starting points in greater investigations of the shifting meanings of these symbols.
If you would like to participate in this exhibition please send us a brief type written project proposal to carlaaspenberg@hotmail.com or tamasveszi@yahoo.com.
This can be a description of a piece that already exists, or a piece that will be created for the show. You may also include JPG images with your proposal if you think it is necessary. We will be reviewing proposals for all 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works along with multi-media installation.
- Please submit your proposals by August 25th 2006** We will notify you by
email if we think your proposal is a good fit for the show.
Thank you for you time and we hope to hear from you!
